25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall: The great Wall hunt!

Do you have photos of any sections of the Berlin Wall located around the globe?
Berlin, October 17th – As many as 146 segments of the Berlin Wall are scattered around the world. The Westin Grand Berlin is on a hunt for parts of the concrete structure that once divided East from West. Anyone posting their own picture with one of the Wall segments from around the world on the hotel’s facebook page has a chance to win a six-day stay in The Westin Grand Berlin, flying in from anywhere on the Air Berlin flight route.
Located on Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse, the hotel opened as the Grand Hotel Berlin back in 1987, before the demise of the People’s Republic of Germany. Since 1997, it has been comprised within the American brand Westin Hotels & Resorts. Some five years ago, The Westin Grand purchased a section of the Berlin Wall and has been offering its guests an authentic cultural experience ever since: Armed with hammers and chisels, they can chip off their own personal piece of German history, just like the Berliners did in the months after the fall of the Wall.
Now that the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is upon us, The Westin Grand is looking beyond the borders of Germany, seeking photographs of the segments of wall that are currently located in all the corners of the globe. There is purported to be almost 150 segments in all – located in places as far flung as Australia and Africa.
The photo competition is being held on www.facebook.com/westingrandberlin and the first posts have already come in, including shots taken in Atlanta, Washington, Virginia and Potsdam. Images can be uploaded up to November 8, 2014. On November 9, the image with the most likes will win. The winner can look forward to five nights in The Westin Grand Berlin and a flight into Berlin provided in collaboration with Air Berlin.

25 years since the Berlin Wall's fall: The Westin Grand is tearing down the Wall

As many as 7,000 hotel guests have chiseled off some 250 kg of the Wall over the last five years

Berlin, October 2014 – The Westin Grand Berlin Hotel Director Rainer Bangert for five years now has been thrilling guests of the Westin Grand on Friedrichstrasse/Unter den Linden with a unique idea: A piece of the original Berlin Wall can be “torn down all over again,” just like Ronald Reagan demanded years ago in front of Brandenburg Gate when he said, “Mister Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” The “Fall of the Berlin Wall” offer makes it possible.*
Some 7,000 hotel guests have since taken up chisels and safety goggles and torn down 250 kg of the Wall, carrying off the results of their work into the world as souvenirs of Berlin. This segment of wall – part of the original Berlin Wall between the Zehlendorf district and the town of Teltow until 1989 – has been standing in front of the hotel since January 9, 2009. When it was installed, it was 1 m wide, 3.70 high and weighed 2.7 t. Today the concrete section is about 1.20 m shorter and only 90 cm wide.

“America, Asia, Europe, Australia: Guests from all over the world book our special Wall offer. And not only foreigners are intrigued by the idea of taking up hammer and chisel to obtain a piece of the original Berlin Wall. Our idea to serve Berlin-style ‘curry wurst’ and champagne has also proven very successful,” says Rainer Bangert, summarizing the initiative, which he launched on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

* All guests who book the “Fall of the Berlin Wall” offer at the Westin Grand Berlin may take a hammer and chisel to the concrete and chip out a little piece of their own to take home with them, even 25 years after the wall fell. Apart from the piece of Berlin Wall, the package includes two nights in The Westin Grand Berlin including tasty, well-balanced Westin SuperFoods breakfast, a Berlin curried sausage and a glass of Champagne.
The package starts at EUR 382,00 in a double room or EUR 342 in a single room. This offer is available on request, subject to availability, for further information or reservations, please contact the hotel directly: The Westin Grand Berlin, Friedrichstr.

Lobby und Foyer, The Westin Grand Berlin, Friedrichstr. 158-164, 10117 Berlin

  • 03.06.2014 bis 02.07.2014 München - The Westin Grand München
  • 13.08.2014 bis 10.09.2014 Leipzig - The Westin Leipzig
  • 16.09.2014 bis 16.10.2014 Dresden - The Westin Bellevue Dresden
  • 18.10.2014 bis 19.11.2014 Potsdam - Mercure Hotel Potsdam-City

Westin Grand Berlin General Manager becomes a city beekeeper

Press release

WESTIN GRAND BERLIN GENERAL MANAGER BECOMES A CITY BEEKEEPER – BEES RESIDE ON THE HOTEL ROOF WITH A VIEW OF THE REICHSTAG

The Westin Grand Berlin makes its own honey; from now on, the breakfast buffet will include "Berlin lime-tree blossom honey by The Westin Grand Berlin". Hotel director Rainer Bangert is consciously supporting the settlement of bees in the city.

Berlin, in June 2011 - In May, some new and unusual summer guests took up residence in the Westin Grand Berlin. Hotel director Rainer Bangert is now a city beekeeper and the proud owner of four bee hives which are currently lodged on the roof of the hotel. Berlin beekeeper Marc-Wilhelm Kohfink is instructing Rainer Bangert in his new duties, providing specialist support and advice. The most striking aspect is the outlook the little insects can enjoy. The bees have the best view of the Reichstag and their new terrain is laid out right before them: the eponymous Linden (lime trees) of Berlin's celebrated "Unter den Linden" boulevard and the flora of the adjacent Tiergarten.

Rainer Bangert is looking forward to the harvest. The first honey is already finished: some 120 kilograms are expected in all: "Our very own organic-quality gourmet lime-tree blossom honey is now available at our breakfast buffet. And that's a rather exceptional treat for our hotel guests!" "Berlin lime-tree blossom honey by The Westin Grand Berlin" will also be available for sale at reception in 100 g jars. Available for 5 euros a jar, the honey is quality-approved by the German organic farmers' association Bioland.

"When I first heard about the problem of bee deaths in the agricultural sector in early 2010, the idea of supporting city beekeeping was born. For there are no pesticides here and the biodiversity offers these hardworking little creatures the chance to gather nectar from a wide variety of different plant species, unlike agricultural areas, in which monocultures abound. The Westin Grand Berlin is located directly on the boulevard Unter den Linden, with its leafy trees, and the Tiergarten city park is also nearby, creating ideal conditions for our new guests – or rather, our new workers – to gather nectar.

The first harvest is already being put to a range of different uses: at breakfast, in the restaurant, at events. The biggest hit is our home-made honey ice-cream, followed by fruity vinaigrettes and simple honey loaves.

The Westin Grand, Berlin

At the heart of it all. The Westin Grand is situated in historical downtown Berlin: on the corner of Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse, a stone's throw from tourist attractions, company headquarters and the government district. Some rooms command a view of the magnificent historical boulevard, others look out onto Friedrichstrasse or the 3000-m² garden in the inner courtyard. Escape the bustle of everyday life and dive into a world of pure wellbeing. Extensively renovated in 2008, the 400 rooms are a perfect enticement to relax, enveloping guests in a soothing ambience of warm, subtle shades and timelessly elegant design. And after refreshing slumbers in a Westin Heavenly Bed and the balanced SuperfoodsRX breakfast buffet, guests are sure to make a bright and cheerful start to the day. Alongside the spa with its modern gym and pool, the capacious, light-flooded lobby, with its large staircase, is another energizing spot. A place to see and be seen, to relax and recharge.

A codex-compliant and certified business hotel, the Westin Grand Berlin truly stands out, offering eleven very different banqueting rooms for conferences with up to 220 participants or functions with up to 400 guests. Winner of the World Travel Award in 2010 as Germany’s Leading Business Hotel.

Gänsebraten-Saison im Westin Grand Berlin

Presseinformation

GÄNSEBRATEN-SAISON IM WESTIN GRAND BERLIN - WIEDER DABEI: DIE GANS „TO GO“

Knusprige Gans für Zuhause ‚to go’ vom 11. November bis 26. Dezember 2011

Bestellung 48 Stunden im Voraus, mitnahmebereit (Lieferung gegen Aufpreis).

The Westin Grand Berlin Glows in a Spectacular 3-D Light Display

the westin grand berlin

download press release

1 million visitors to the Festival of Lights 2010
Berlin flagship The Westin Grand Berlin glows in a
spectacular 3-D light display – artists successfully
visualize the Westin feeling of wellness in travel
Berlin, October 29, 2010 – butterflies fluttering and birds soaring, flowers
blooming and grass sprouting – with animated 3D and 2D natural elements, the
Westin hotel brand transformed its Berlin flagship, The Westin Grand Berlin,
into a light and video sensation for the Festival of Lights from October 14 to 24.
About a million visitors came to watch over 60 illuminated Berlin sights. Each
evening at dusk, the artists visualized the Westin feeling of wellness and rege-
neration in travel. With delicate feathers that drifted gently from the sky, spar-
kling droplets of water and tumbling waves, they transformed the façades of the
hotel into an exceptional light sensation.
The spectacular light display was designed by artists from the Belgian company
Beam-Inc.be and the software required for the special 3D and 2D-effects were pro-
vided by the German firm Vioso. Each day, a three-person team sets up four projec-
tors with an output of 20,000 lumens: two for the Unter den Linden façade and two
projectors for the Friedrichstrasse side, all visualized in HD quality. Currently number-
ing almost 170 establishments worldwide, Westin Hotels view themselves as havens
of tranquility. Offering countless opportunities to relax and refresh, they are a byword
for the sensuous side of travel. Even as they check in, guests are transported into a
sense of wellbeing with signature scents, flower arrangements and appealing lighting
concepts. Indeed, every area of the hotel is devoted to the enhancement of recupera-
tion and relaxation: a good night of restful sleep in a Heavenly Bed, balanced susten-
ance with Superfoods or physical wellbeing through special jogging options and Wes-
tin Workout.

The Westin Grand Berlin receives World Travel
Award as Germany’s Leading Business Hotel
2010
Berlin, October 27, 2010 – The Westin Grand Berlin has been named Germany’s
Leading Business Hotel 2010, receiving one of the highest accolades in the
travel sector, the World Travel Award. A total of 183000 decision-makers from
the hotel and tourism sector selected their favorites in a varied range of
different categories. The Westin Grand Berlin, located on the prestigious
boulevard Unter den Linden at the corner to Friedrichstrasse, is a modern grand
hotel in a central location offering a high standard of service.
Rainer Bangert, General Manager of the Westin Grand Berlin, is proud to receive the
World Travel Award as Germany's Leading Business Hotel 2010: "This award proves
to us that we at the Westin Grand Berlin recognize and fulfil the needs of business
travelers, guaranteeing high standards of quality and service." The Westin Grand
Berlin, renovated in 2008, meets the specific demands of business travelers with its
offers and services: Two years earlier, the Verband Deutsches Reisemanagement e.V
(German Travel Management Association) also endorsed the establishment as a
Certified Business Hotel.
The World Travel Awards, which have been running since 1993, pay tribute to
outstanding services in the tourism industry. They are based on the evaluations of
183000 representatives of the travel sector in over 160 countries – including travel
agency employees, tour operators, tourism organizations and traffic carriers. The
voting is conducted for different regions: Africa, Asia/Pacific, Carribean, Central and
Latin America, Europe, Middle East, North and South America. All regional winners
then take part in the finale of the World Travel Awards – this year's award ceremony is
to be held in London on 7 November.
